I've never played the Final Fantasy games, as I'm not really into all that magic/elves stuff. I had a game called Farenheit a while ago which I loved, but I finished it too quickly.
What I'm after is basically something with a good storyline and something that requires proper thinking to solve. But not something like Resident Evil. Any ideas?

I think you're confused about what a Role Playing Game is. It sounds like you just want a game that you can spend alot of time with, not an RPG. RPGs almost inherently have something in common with Final Fantasy seeing as how it kind of defined the RPG genre on home consoles. Almost all RPGs (on home consoles) have a magic aspect to them, but not even Final Fantasy has anything to do with elves, so I'm not sure if I know what you mean.
But anyways, below is a link where you can see some very highly ranked RPGs. You can click on each title for a review. But again, I think you'd be more interested in something like action/adventure.

You say your looking for an RPG without stuff like magic/elves then there is not many out there i'm afraid but i recommend you try out kingdom hearts 1 and 2. Then there are games like dragon quest which looks amazing by the way then there's rogue galaxy coming out soon which looks dare i say it more amazing than dragon quest. And plus in rogue galaxy there's no stop start gameplay that you get with games like final fantasy and not so many random battles which can get a bit tedious at times.

Sorry can't think of any RPG games for PS2 that aren't about some kind of quest usually involving fighting (sword, magic or similar), but if you want to give any of them a try:

Primal is a cool RPG for the PS2, been around awhile too so should be cheap to pick up.

If you don't want any magic, and something more adult you should take a look at Indigo Prophecy. Not real long, but a GREAT story.

im not sure if it is rpg but i love the game myself it is calls psi ops the mind gate conspiracy i have have it you get guns and psi powers such as telekinesis(lifting things and people into the air) pyrokinesis (throwing fire from your body to burn ppl and kill them) mind drain (gives you your psi energy back) remote viewing (lets you see stuff with out going into the danger) and aura view (it lets you see invisible things such as bombs and creatures)
it is an awsome game if you get it i hope you enjoy it as much as i do
