Negative changes in structure, composition and functioning of an ecosystem are indicators of environmental degradation. For example, reduction in biodiversity of the ecosystem, reduced rate of nutrient cycle etc.
These negative changes may take place because of either natural calamities or processes, or human interventions, or both.
Natural calamities likes forest fires, volcanic eruptions, storms, typhoons and cyclones, earthquakes, famines and floods may cause environmental degradation.
Human Induced Environmental Degradation
Various human activities partially or completely affect functioning of ecosystems at various levels and lead to their degradation. For example, mining an large scale logging can completely change the land use and disturb the relationships of the biotic and abiotic elements. Some human activities which can lead to environmental degradation are as follows:
[1] Population growth and increase in consumption levels
[2] Migration and displacement
[3] Urbanization
[4] Industrialization and transport
[5] Shifting cultivation
[6] Tourism
[7] Construction of large dams
[8] Wars

Environmental Degradation is related to the deterioration of the environment both in terms of quantity and extinction of some wildlife species and quality like air, water or land pollution.
Environmental degradation is one of the Ten threats officially cautioned by the High Level Threat Panel of the United Nations. WRI(the World Resources Institute), UNEP(the United Nations Environment Programme), UNDP(the United Nations Development Programme) and the World Bank have made public an important report on health and the environment worldwide on May 1, 1998.
Environmental Change and Human Health, a special section of World Resources 1998-99 in this report describes how preventable illnesses and premature deaths are still occurring in shockingly large numbers. If they have a chance to make vast improvements in human health, millions of people are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. In these poorest regions of the world an estimated one in five children will not live to see their fifth birthday, primarily because of environment-related diseases. 11 million childhood have been dying every year worldwide - equal to the combined populations of Norway and Switzerland - mostly due to malaria, acute respiratory infections or diarrhoea, all illnesses that are largely preventable.

Environmental degradation is a global issue. Problems like global warming, deforestation, destruction of old growth forests and industrial pollution are all linked to poor use of our natural resources.
The actions of both wealthy and poor countries are responsible, yet the poorest people suffer most.
Floods and droughts that are a result of global warming are largely accelerated by pollution from wealthy countries. Unfortunately, the effects are felt most by the world’s poorest people. The environment also suffers when poor people cut down trees for fuel.
Finding sustainable environmental solutions will help reduce poverty and conserve the planet for us all – rich and poor.
