I'll sometimes use it to slow down when theres a cop behind me and I don't want to slam on my brakes and make it obvious. Just wondering if it's ok to do.

If you have rear disc brakes, it wont hurt a thing. If you have drum brakes, the E-brake only uses one shoe on each rear wheel. it will wear half the (rear) shoes if done repeatedly. Once in a while shouldn't be a big deal.

It's really best not to do this. #1. The back wheels have only 35% - 40% if the vehicles concentrated on the rear tires. #2.When you attempt to stop more of the vehicle weight thrusts forward. #.3 When you apply the mechanical emergency brake the rear end may and usually looses traction and slides. Keep in mind there's no master cylinder to apply brake fluid to shoes or pads. The emergency brake cable is either pulling ther brake shoes apart to cause friction on the drums or mechanically squeezing the small rear brake pads against the small ( compared to the front) rotors. It's a very uncontrolled way to stop a car. Certainly there to be used if the hydraulic braking system fails. Good Luck.

Drifters and Rally Car drivers do this all the time. Pulling the brake handle while negotiating a turn locks up the rear and makes the car spin. This allows the driver to either drift or make the car turn faster.

Of course this will also make the brake pads wear out faster. But then again, the amount of wear is not significant enough if done occasionally and you do not apply enough pressure to lock the rear tires.

Ya sure it is, until the cop behind you doesn't realize you are slowing down and rear end you as your brake lights tell him nothing...

Doing this poses no real mechanical issue as the Parking brake also is known as the EMERGENCY brake. If your hydraulic brakes fail the E-Brake can slow you down but it uses the rear wheels only and takes longer as you only have half the braking power.....

A lot of parking brakes on vehicles with rear disk brakes are just tiny little shoes in the hubs of the rear rotors, that will wear out or break in no time.

Its an emergency brake... Its not meant to slow a moving car... Just take your foot off the gas.. or better yet, go the speed limit in the first place.

i have done that a time or two myself, but it is not a good practice. the pads on the emergency brakes are more designed for holding a car in place, not stopping it. you will end up burning off the pads quickly.

the parking brake only actuates the rear brakes -

only half your stopping power - and you will wear them out much faster

nope - use the regular brakes

In an emergency, like a brake failure, otherwise why would you?
