The previous answerer got it right - Project Gutenberg is the place for free public-domain literature. I have to add to that answer, though. If you would like to listen to the books in addition to reading them, or maybe instead of reading them with your eyes, then Librivox is your answer. It is also entirely free, with all books read by volunteers. I've included a link for you. Enjoy a world of information and entertainment at the click of a key.
