First, just like computers have helped everything else in the last few years: ability to store, manage, and compare vast amounts of data (or spectra in this case) very rapidly.

Additionally, a lot of times mathematical transformations are required, such as looking at a series of spectra collected for kinetics, where curves need to be plotted, fitted, and analyzed. Again, computers=fast. All of that used to be done by hand.
