No, the hard drive is where that is all stored, you can even take that out of the laptop and the info doesn't change.

The only thing that may be affected is the BIOS, so if you are worried, when you boot up the laptop, go into the BIOS and make a note of all the settings. That way, after replacing the battery, you can go in again and check all the settings, and change back any you need to.

The battery keeps the clock going when the mains power is off. It also (or it used to) preserve some memory settings in the computer motherboard (BIOS settings). These are the setting you can change on boot up.

I have known systems to reboot after a battery change and not recognise the hard disc - which is a major problem! But, I think that most modern computers would discover the correct setting from the disc.

To be safe, enter BIOS setup (usually by hitting DELETE during initial start up) and and make a note the BIOS settings you currently have. If they are lost you can reset them as they were after changing the battery.

PS. When I had a 80386 PC (about 12 years ago) the battery was soldered on to the motherboard and could not be changed (or at least not without a soldering iron!). Most PCs now have a round "watch type" battery.

do u mean a laptop?? in either case no - just make sure u shut the thing down before replacing. the hard drive is permanently written to until written over - so having no power is like replacing the covers on a book - the stuff stays there until you yourself change it (or some malignant little bugger comes along and rips the pages out (eg a virus))

You mean the dinky little button battery?

Nope, you just lost the bios settings and time... so you may have to tell it any customisations you made (like boot order, tweaked memory speed and so on), the disk size and tracks unless it finds that for itself (most modern computers do) and the date/time.

Won;t affect the disk contents.

All the answers you have got said you wouldn't lose anything - i would suggest you back-up all your stuff before un-doing or maknig changes to your system. The main reason why i said you should first back-up is to protect your data in case of mishap.Good luck
