why do at least half of them make themselves look butch, or that they chop their hair real short, get kinda muscular, and overall just lose their femininity. Is it penis envy and if so then why do they claim they hate men so much yet want to be them? the other half of lesbians are still girly, they just like other girls. it just doesnt make sense

alright, so i make a general question based on observation, not stereotype. I posted the question to get some insight from the lesbian community as i do not know any personally. That isnt to say i don't know anyone in the homosexual community, for living in NYC and a graduate of NYU makes it impossible to not. I have two fabulously gay friends in tribeca who taught me alot..but they are men. As far as women are concerned, all i have to go off of is the stereotypes such as the L word and movies like PCU,etc.
Your hostility amazes me and thanx for not doing what your supposed to be doing on here and enlightening others. The only answer i found on here so far that was any use was the girl who said she chose "butch" becuase of her genes. Otherwise its been hostility, so why should anyone try to relate to you if you dont want to help.

firstly, the question HAS been asked a million times so i can understand people's frustration with answering it and trying to explain it.
secondly, it has nothing to do with "penis envy." "butch" women can buy a penis to strap on, and then take it off..the best of both worlds!!!
also, the way some lesbians dress, walk, and talk is just personal preference. i think many lesbians grew up playing with the boys, and playing sports, which made them feel much more comfortable and they have continued to feel that way with the bigger clothes and shorter hair.
everyone thinks that so many lesbians are really butch, but it's only because when you see them on the street it's more than obvious that they are lesbians!! you don't recognize the femme, cute, little ones, with long hair (there are plenty, trust me - myself being one of them!!)
also, it's just like anything else - there are some lesbians who prefer the short hair, the "stereotypical look", and big clothes, while others prefer dresses and lipstick.
there are some men that prefer to dress "metrosexual" with tighter jeans and combed hair, while some prefer baseball hats, beards and ripped jeans....

Because this is how some of us feel comfortable.Just like how some men are geeks. Some are body builders. Some are metrosexuals. Some women just like to dress and act more masculine than others. Oh, and throw out the penis envy idea. I'm a male to female transsexual and butch lesbian. I don't have penis envy. I want to get rid of the one I've got.

good grief! it doesn't seem to matter how many dozens and dozens of times I see this same ridiculous question, I still amazes me! do you believe every lie, assumption and generalizing stereotype you hear or read?
where do you get that "half" of us make ourselves butch? yes, there are a lot of lesbians who are butch, but it's way less than half...I'd say less than 20 %....and that's being generous.
Penis envy? don't be ridiculous. no lesbian wants to "be" a man, and it's also ridiculous to assume we "hate" men. I have lots of male friends. there's a big difference between hating men and simply not being attracted to them.
people who think like you....basing everything they think on stereotypes....just don't make sense! do you even know anyone that's gay or lesbian? I would doubt it!

This is just a generalization on your part. You feel that you have identified all the lesbian couples that you have met and observed this identifying trait. I would suggest to you that you have seen other lesbian couples but since neither of them presented in a way that you identify as lesbian you mistakenly categorized them as straight. You have probably made the same sort of mistake when trying to identify gay men who don't appear effeminate in any way.

How can it be penis envy? They don't envy it because it is attached to men, who they don't find attractive.
That they should like short hair and bovva boots (there I go stereotyping) is just that - a like.
