It sounds like the lock cylinder in your door knob is in upside down. Depending on the manufacturer, the procedure is different. Remember, the cuts [teeth] on the key should always point upward [lever lock; side-ways].An operating key is always required, or the lock must be picked, and quite often, a speciality tool, must also be used. Unfortunately, this falls under secrets I have sworn to keep, however, the original installation instructions, should tell you how. Or contact the manufacturer, I'm sure they will also help. And of course your friendly neighbourhood locksmith will do it for a modest fee if you bring it to his/her shop.

It depends on the brand of doorknob, but you should be able to rotate the knob 180°. You don't actually rotate the cylinder because the pins need to line up. The whole knob is rotated.

Some doorknobs or leversets are made for either a right hand door or a left hand door, meaning the position of the hinges when viewed from the lock. In this case, when you use a right hand doorknob on a left hand door (and vice versa), the doorknob is upside down. Should this be your situation, you'll have to get a new doorknob.
