There is no way to objectively ascertain the greatest novel. Even panels of literary "experts" will disagree. Here are some from my reading experience, which really should be called "my favorites" rather than "greatest" or contenders for such:
Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert
Le Pere Goriot - Honore de Balzac
The Razor's Edge - W. Somerset Maugham
Steppenwolf - Hermann Hesse
Lady Chatterley's Lover - D. H. Lawrence
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Sun Also Rises - Ernest Hemingway
East of Eden - John Steinbeck
The Call of the Wild - Jack London
Mr. Sammler's Planet - Saul Bellow
The Lost Weekend - Charles Jackson
The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguru
The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Wolfe
On the Road - Jack Kerouac
Tropic of Cancer - Henry Miller
Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry
Burden of Proof - Scott Turow

Pride and Prejudice just got voted top in Britain, but I'd say 1984 by George Orwell. It's good to compare it to today's society when you read it. Everytime I read it it seems to get more and more true!

For me its the diary of Anne Frank. I don't know if it is considered as a novel but it was something really heartwrenching.
