If a company wants to play music/radio whilst customers are on hold, does it need to pay a license or public broadcasting fees or something like that? Where can I find information about all this? Thanks a lot!

In the US, music on hold is licensed by ASCAP and BMI. If you play radio music, you will need both. I do not recommend radio play because they do a lot that might offend your callers, including commercials for your competitors.

If you take music from Sirius or Muzak, they will cover the music on hold and other performance rights as part of the monthly fee.

If your phone system can play a CD, then you can get public domain music that is rights free. One source is www.pastmasters.us
