Are you a loner due to circumstance, or because you don't like being around others? Most dogs are needy. A lot of them constantly want to be around you and try to be the center of your focus whenever possible. If you enjoy your space, that could get irritating very quickly. If that is actually the case either find a mellow, aloof dog, or get a cat. Cats can be extremely affectionate but most of them respect personal space more than dogs [though there are exceptions to this rule; my current cat is very needy, more like a dog, and cries if she feels I'm neglecting her which can include things like not petting her when she's already lying on my lap]. If you feel lonely often, a fun dog who is always willing to engage you and play could be just the ticket too. Dogs are much more likely than cats to worship unconditionally and rely on you heavily. Cat are more independent and give you that impression that since they don't truly need you they're doing you a favor by tolerating you anyway. Which of these is more appealing depends on your personality.
For any pet, make absolutely sure the two of you have a good rapport before you adopt. Pets can live a long time, and you need to make sure that their personality complements yours and that you'll always have time for them. I'm not much of a people person, but nothing compares to that feeling I get when my cats would make it clear that though they don't need me they WANT me to be around.
As for finding a good pet, I'd suggest going to a shelter or rescue organization over buying from a breeder. Mixed breeds tend to have less problems [pretty much all purebred animals have at least some inbreeding in their background, which isn't great for their health and longevity], and the possibilities for both looks and personalities are endless. They're also much cheaper and you have the added bonus of giving a home to an animal who needs one. Most places will be able to tell you about their animals' personalities; if there's any in particular you like they'll let you play together or take them for walks so you can get to know each other before you commit. Don't rush into getting a pet. It's worth waiting to find The One that you know you don't want to live without. Or maybe The Two [or Seven, or Fifty-Three..]. But you know what I mean. :)
Good luck!

Only you know for sure what kind of dog is perfect for you.
Do some research on different breeds and go from there.
I have seen animals heal hearts and bring many smiles to many different people.
My daughter was in the hospital and they had a visiting canine that came into the hospital ward, the smiles and laughter that dog gave is something I will never forget. True healing and from the heart.
Yes, I think animals are peoples best friends....they are there when you need them....always with a smile and truly miss you when you are gone....They depend on you too...and with out any nagging too...lol
Do some research....I believe it would be the best thing for you.
I know I have two small dogs and they are my smiles. I love my children more than anything....however my dogs never talk back...lol
best wishes
Below I have listed web sites....so you can research the breeds and find the one that suits you best...do they shed hair, what kind of space they need, potential health problems, life span and personalities.....good luck hope this helps...

Since you're a loner, why would you want a real dog? Dogs are almost like people, and that'd go against the whole "loner" ideal. I'd recommend getting a stuffed animal dog from the toy store.

YES!
Dogs are an incredible solace for someone who lives alone. Especially if you're not often away from home for extended periods of time. I grew up in a very small town and our dogs were all rescue dogs,.. strays. Each of them were full of personality, energy and all they wanted to do was to be with us. A great source of love & joy! You should definitely give it a try if you're ready for it. The first week or so, as with anything is a bit of adjustment,.. housebreaking,.. feeding,.. etc. but it all falls into place soon enough.
If you're in a metro area, then pay a visit to a shelter,.. I've always been partial to smaller dogs,.. lap dogs. BUT,.. I actually discovered, much to my surprise, that Rotweilers are actually very loving and gentle dogs,.. by nature, but these guys are huge powerhouses,... and they TRY their luck as LAP DOGS. Some, (as in those rescued from hip-hop crack houses) may have issues, though.
Talk some friends that have dogs,.. and think about what you want,. then go for it,... it could be great!!
Good Luck

It depends how/where you live.
If you don't have a yard, are out less than 10 hours per day, and can walk outside when it's dark, get a small dog - Yorkshire terrier or a miniature pincher
If you have a yard and it's fenced, and you are out during the day, but can come home for lunch, get a medium dog like a lab or a german shepherd or a golden retriever
if you might have allergies, get a poodle or something with poodle in it
If you have lots of space and the dog can run/roam off-leash and you're home during the day, get a border collie or a husky or a beagle. If you get one of these, you need to tire the dog's mind as well as walk/run the dog.

Well if the person is introverted but active, I suggest a boxer, they are a lot of fun, playful and energetic. You could take him on long walks and just have a friend. But, I'd have to say any dog would make a great addition to any household, dogs are wonderful soulful creatures, who can make anyone feel loved, even on the darkest of days!

i don't think so, you need bilateral communication when alone . dog can't understand ur problems, only listens to u, and its not enough for a loner. i'm alone and most of the time feel lonely and dog or doll or cat or else couldn't help me. a loner needs a person

Yes i think it is a good idea. And I would also go to a shelter or look in the paper for people who need to find there pet a home... Then you will be helping an animal that needs a home as well.

go to a pet shop or a pet shelter, and you'll meet the right companion when you see him or her.
also there are other activities that would make a loner happy. go for aerobics lessons or language courses and make friends. you may not be a loner after all!

digital stranger, draining, rude, lazy and cheeky, who could pick to be around any of that? you could nicely be a loner too. there's no longer something unusual approximately that. some people are extroverts others no longer. My spouse and that i dread the events we are invited to, and our actual friends we are able to anticipate one hand. get excitement from your single digit friends. get excitement from some time with the canines on the sea coast and trekking and so on and don`t experience to blame approximately it.
