In my religion, ISLAM, women have their own unique positions. I'm a young woman myself feel respected by the people around me. To be respected, you first need to respect others with love. Respect is something you need to work very hard to own it. You need to radiate positive values within yourself in order to be respected. Woman that are not respected by other is women who do not respect themselves. To own other respect, we need to respect ourselves first.

Most societies are patriarchial (which has a biblical/Koran base, by the way) so the man is "the head of the house", "the provider", "the guide" and women's positions in these socities are serving the man and seeing to it that his house is well looked after. Because of centuries old attitudes like that, women have become marginalized part of society; next only to children. They are weak economically, thus they have no role in decision making. They are not allowed to go to school when they should. So they are mostly an uneducated. It's all a cycle, really. A vicious cycle. Even the "modern" woman isn't free from it. So how can it be broken? By empowering women so that they become part of the decision making crew. By teaching them that there is more to being a woman than the "traditional" feminine roles of a wife and a mother. By making them capable of saying "no" if they don't want to say yes, and the ability to give him the finger if they want him to take it and shove it! That's what i do! and guys pretty much respect me.

Why do all those social engineers posing as authority figures (conservative, liberal or otherwise) continue to impose their "pet values" on the rest of us...and then expect us all to never question them, and/or to follow them like just so many sheep? Why can't people just be allowed to decide for THEMSELVES what makes them happy or unhappy? Just because ONE person (or 100 people) said to an interviewer they're unhappy, their "opinions" certainly don't speak for everyone else in the world. Happiness is not something that can be measured empiracally. Happiness is a very subjective thing. What makes one person happy does NOT make another person happy. Happiness does NOT come from anyone being forced into playing any sort of "role." Roles by their very nature are "unnatural" whether they are advocated by 'modern' feminists or have been coerced upon them by the conservative right wing fundamentalists of any religion. The reality is there were, are and always will be men and women, who will remain LAZY and they will never be emotional or psychologically mature enough to take personal responsibility for themselves and their own happiness or pursuit thereof....and they'll always seek to blame someone else (whether it's the parents, the schools, the ex, the kids, the church, the state, feminism, right wingers etc) for the problems they've more than likely brought upon themselves. and what's more? There will always be those women AND men, regardless of sociopolitical persuasion who will never be happy unless they're whining or complaining about or finding fault with something or someone else....even if by some "miracle" the world changes to their liking. Why? Because all that complaining is what really makes them happy and gives them something to live for. As my ex- father in law would say, some people would cry even if they were hung with a new rope! LOL

It's a very good question. Most of feminist theory is about trying to answer this question.
Most feminists think that, in order for women to be respected in society, women need to be recognised as full human beings, with exactly the same rights as men, the same responsibilities too, the same respect of their bodies and control over their lives, and the same recognition of their intellectual and personal individualities. Physically, women may be different from men, but that does not make them "better" or "worse" in human terms (though they may of course be better or worse at individual tasks).
Changing this is a very complex matter. The booklist below may be a good place to start reading.
I've also listed a Wikipedia page which might help.

Any human being with minimum intelligence & who uses his/her brains to think for themselves will know that all living things are equal on this planet. If women are not respected then the society we have created for ourselves is vey wrong. Women do not have to do anything which any other human being has to do to earn respect i.e treat others with respect.

i think this question shall remain unsolved.because in some cases we can't change the mentality of human beings.we give respect to others when we want to give .no one can force to do so.
five fingers of a hands does not equal, good things bring bad with them. to improve the condition of women in society we can only do that at least we we will give respect to women whether others give or not.

It's only because of women's itself, if women's or girls can keep themselves true and faithfulness then everybody give them proper respect and they can even increase the respect with true values of life

u r wrong. women hold a special place both in mythology & history (indian ) women r given due respect everywhere. society has accepted that shiveji's bravery & good qualities came from his mother's teaching . society has accepted jhansi's love for freedom & love for her country. society has always.respected women. but certain men took this to their advantage & said " women r very precious . so, let them stay at home & we will protect them " then the trouble started. now even this has changed. we r respected & recognised for our intelligence & patience.

Empower them thru economic independence to make them not demand but command respect in the society. If economic independent she will have a mind to progress towards enlightenment and it will not be far when the woman will realise that she is the most enriched soul as there are no men in this world; the only Man in this world is a Living God and one who worships HIM will realise that to attain and realise God you have no choice but to have rather develop a woman's heart. To attain the Supreme but every man will have to become a woman. My answer may sound philosophical but its true.

u cannot randomly say that women are not respected in the society yes its true that in certain societies women are not given due respect. women should be made aware of their rights and they should be encouraged to come forward and speak out about their problems and put their point of view in front of the respected authorities
