how can i transform my home computer in to a internet server, do i really need to pay other people to keep my website running.

No you do not....


First you need a machine that can handle running server software. Most computers today can do that. Bare minimum hardware I would suggest should be Duron 750Mhz cpu, 512megs or ram, 80gig hard drive. Next is the operating system, either one of the *nix flavors is vary good, MS WindowsNT old but still really good or MS 2000 Advanced server is better. Be prepared to have alot of information ready when you install these operating systems as they DNS information, Web info and much more. The main thing is that you should really have a static ip address one which never changes and a good connection. A T1 connection is minimum and fairly cheap now days. There are lots of logistics involved.

you can use dyndns[1] to make your machine publicly visible and setup virtual hosting[2]
