Think about this. The government people cannot find their own *** with both hands. Do you honestly think that these people, who at their best can mess up a tuna fish sandwich can really keep something like that hidden for years and years? It just does not hold water.

Well, yes it be hard to keep a secret, but you can make it look fuzzy.
That's why you often heard that some governments are witholding evidence of alien contact, but you sometimes wonder if they're real.

Considering our life span 3 score years and 10.
Then the time scales of the universe, and the possible synchronisation of our point in evolutionary development with that of say an alien as being say plus or minus thousands of years. An alien visitor could knock Cooks nautical adventures into his cocked hat. he was only a few hundred years out of sync with his discovered natives. An alien visitor IMHO would have one motive and I think we should not advertise our presence by sending bottles out into space saying "we are over here"
As for governments, they are nomarks in such a vast time scale. If aliens arive they must be rather smarter than us planetary parasites

Concealing the existence of aliens,by the government,makes no sense at all.
Aliens exist in many places throughout the universe but none has never visited earth and probably never will.
I am sure aliens speculate about us the same way.

I think by now, if aliens existed and the governments knew about them, that it would be public knowledge.
It's not possible to keep something secret like this for so long.
