Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, is a term that refers to a situation in which one company purchases a manufactured product from another company and resells the product as its own, usually as a part of a larger product the original company is selling. However, there is confusion among many as to whether OEM refers to the company that buys the product and resells it or the company that originally manufactured the product.

OEM means two things:

1) Original Equipment Manufacturer
2) Other Equipment Manufacturer

Almost always it is #1. In your case you just have a certain type of Windows software installed that is only installed by computer manufacturers on new computers. It's different than the OS you buy in a computer store and it's better to have of the two if you have the original disks.

In the world of Microsoft there are two... Retail and OEM for everything they sell. Once installed the software (OS) operates exactly the same... only the installation is different. Has more to do with partitioning the hard drive.

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer. You must have Windows 95, because Windows no longer has the OEM in the user key.
