Well, if you're talking about traidtional cartoon animation or cel animation, you make a drawing for each frame of the film (24 frames per second= 24 drawings per 1 second of film). You start with the key frames and then draw the in-betweens. You use blue col-erase on animation paper on a lightbox with a disc. The light shows through the paper which lets you see the drawings underneath and the disc lets you rotate the paper360 degrees.

To film your hand drawn animation you can either use a downshooter which is basically a camera pointing down over a light table and you capture a picture of each drawing. You then use a computer or a device called a Lunchbox to play the invidual frames at desired speeds. You can also just scan your drawings into your computer and use compiling software like Adobe Premiere or a simple one like Windows Movie Maker to put the frames together.

Computer animation can be done with simple programs like Macromedia Flash, Adobe After Effects, or Adobe Photoshop. Software like that lets you create keys and lets you place objects/files onto those keys. You create keyframes and the program automatically fills in the in-betweens. Or you can do the in-betweens yourself.

3D computer animation is done with programs like Autodesk Maya and Autodesk 3D Studio Max. With those software, you create models, rig the models to move, texture the models, and then animate the models by moving the models on keyframes. You then render out the scene in a movie format in the software.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

If you need just a short type of it for the website (up to 10 sec) - you can use photoshop with layers, and save the picture as animated GIF. Otherwise you will need a program called Flash or another one Macromedia Freehand
