Why Madonna/Kylie/etc ? There seems no rhyme or reason for it.
[this is in reference to a Graham Norton hosted show that was on last night about "disco queens". The inference seemed to be that if you're not gay you're not allowed to like disco, or queens; conversely, if you *are *gay, there is some unwritten law that says you *have* to like mincing about to "I will bloody Survive"]

Kylie and Madonna are now Dance divas. The dance world is supposedly all about gay. Its a stereotype made by those who were afraid that dance would one day take over (which it almost did).
Me personally I would rather listen to that then the Pop and Rap any day, and I'm not gay. I know a gay man who hates dance music. Kylie and Madonna may be gay icons, but they are still great artists.

A prediliction for sparkly things, making music that you can dance to, personal tragedy, a slightly unreal appearance and drug or alcohol problems seem to be regular features of 'gay icon-ness'.
I agree about the generalisations though. Screaming queens like Norton give the gayers a bad name. I am suspicious of ANY adult who likes 'I will survive' so it seems unfair to assume it is some sort of gay anthem.

Gay people wanting to be in that person's place or a wanting to be like that person with all the thrills and spills.
They are either jealous or envious of the Icon - would like to be them or be like them - have what they have.
Men want the men that the Icon has drooling over them.
Women just want the Icon.

Well you got to admit that Madonna does look like a man in drag !
Kylie however is beautiful and maybe the drag queens want to look like her (?)

I think Kylie is a gay icon due to her being so good looking, and keeps on working so hard to succeed.
Her songs appeal to gays, woman and gays want to be her best friend and men fancy her.

a gay icon is someone who seems to live on the edge and not care who judges them or what people thinkof them, and go by their own rules, seems like gays have a hard time with judgment so they look up to the people who seem to be in a simular situation. thats what makes a "gay icon"
