I am currently temping but have just been offered a permanent fulltime position at another company. Thing is I am 4 weeks pregnant! Do I tell them as soon as I start (which is this week!) or wait and could they then retract their offer of the job? also will I be entitled to maternity leave?

Seeing as you are already pregnant, you won't be able to claim statutory maternity pay because you have to start work for a company before you got pregnant to qualify.
However, you will be entitled to maternity allowance if you work for 6 months of your pregnancy. The amounts work out largely the same except with maternity pay you are entitled to 6 weeks at full (or nearly full) pay whereas allowance you get 90% of your average earnings up to £108 a week.

You are under no legal obligation to tell them you are pregnant, and seeing as it is very very early days I don't think you should tell them because you could easily not know at this point.

If the company offers maternity pay that is above and beyond the statutory, you might be entitled to that. You should be told about those sorts of benefits when you join.

If you want the job i say accept it, but I wouldnt tell them right away that you are expecting. You are early enough that you may not even know that you are pregnant... wait a few weeks after starting, prove yourself a little bit and then tell them that you just found out you are expecting, act just as surprised as they will be. By law they can not fire you or anything like that. AS far as the maternity leave you are entitled to it also by law but you however are not entitled to get paid at some new jobs, so that is something you will have to look into .

I would accept the job and I would not tell them of my pregnancy until the second trimester begins. I don't think it is legal for them to retract their offer of employment, but I know that once you are employed by them, it IS illegal to terminate you on the basis of your pregnancy. It would be discrimination. As for maternity leave, company policy varies as to pay, but most allow for 6 weeks leave (paid or unpaid). The company I work for allows for 6 weeks unpaid leave, however, I can get short-term disability, which pays a percentage of my regular salary. Also, some companies offer healthcare benefits from the first day of employment, but, again, you were already pregnant when you accepted the job, so it would be considered a pre-existing condition. Unless, of course, you already have health insurance and have had it for the past 12 months, the pre-existing clause is waived.
Hope I helped. Good luck to you in your new job and with your pregnancy and brand new baby!!!

congrats on the pregnancy, as for is you tell them now thats really up to you you could wait untill you get your certificate from the doc or midwife. If you haven't signed a contract they may be able to retract the offer, but then this could be some kind of discrimination as they would only be retracting it as you are pregnant.
You will be entitled to maternity leave but not maternity pay and may have to claim maternity allowance instead

id wait till i was settled and then tell them as you are only 4 weeks because you should be entitled to maternity because you will have been working for them over 26 wks befor your baby is due so some companys may retract the offer as they wouldnt want to pay you for 9 months maternity leave.
good luck hun what ever you decide and congratulations.

You dont have to tell an employer you are pregnant until 15 weeks before your due date, so I would wait. Every woman is now entitled to 26 weeks maternity leave, however long you have been with the company, in fact that figure has just risen (i dont know what to though).

Yes tell them and yes you will still be entitled to maternity pay. you have to tell them because of health and safety reasons, for fire alarms and drills etc they have to be aware of your situation. Also a risk assessment will have to carried out once you are a certain time into your pregnancy.

They cannot take back their offer of employment and if they try you can do them for unfair dismissal, after all if you're only 4 weeks pregnant now you can't have known about it when you went for the job and interview.

As long as you are employed in your 15th week then they have to honour you with SMP (statutory maternity pay).

Congrats and good luck with your new job.

I would wait till you started work. You are entitled to paid maternity leave if you have been with your employer for more than a week before you became pregnant. You will be entitled to time off but you should consult your local citizens advice to find out what benefits you will get and for how long. good luck with your pregnancy. x x

You should tell them up front just in case you have any troubles and need to take leave earlier than you expect or even just going to the doctors by law if they would then say they don't want you to work there it could be considered discrimination and no matter how long you have worked at a job they have to give you maternity leave when its time
