Well I think you are trying to put several issues into one. Learning to speak English is needed for people to become a more productive part of our society. There are sooooo many English language programs across the country that are free for people to attend and improve their English language skills. Lots of people go to them, if they didn't the government (state and federal) wouldn't waste their money on it. I worked in an English language program for adults for one year and people are really excited and dedicated about learning English because they know they will be more successful in this country if they do. What we need to realize is that it takes a long time(sometimes a few years) to become fluent in another language, especially if you have never studied it before or communicated with a native speaker. Some people only have a basic ability to communicate in English and just use what they know or are too embarrassed to try because Americans aren't tolerant or patient of people's mistakes and accents. Think about it from this perspective next time you are talking to someone with an accent and try to be more patient, not ignorantly insensitive.

As far as multiculturalism goes it will work but everyone has to be willing to try. It involves actually stepping out of your comfort zone and getting to know more about the other cultures around you and that exist in the world. Although we have people from all over the world here, most Americans don't even take the time to understand other people because they don't think it is important. This is well known and because of this many immigrants are uncomfortable trying or don't even try to become friends with Americans. If you really want multiculturalism to work show people that you are interested in getting to know about them and their culture by asking questions, going to cultural events, break bread with people of different cultures and talk to them. You will be sruprised but people really want to have intercultural exchanges... they want to share their culture with you and learn more about American culture (or European) from you. If no one in your country is willing to share the culture with immigrants, how else will they understand our way of life, thus making it easier for them to become part of it? If you really want things to change be a part of the solution.

Stop being afraid of people who are different than you and you will see the world in a whole new way.

I second that notion!

It doesn't work because it requires all parties involved to arrive at a point of COMPROMISE. Some on the Left call this "Tolerance". As this "Tolerance" propagates across the land we witness the erosion of our Borders, Language and Culture. The prelude to our downfall,... Hopefully we'll get our head out of the sand before it's too late.

Of course some people will call you racist...the pushy people. The United States of America has worked because everyone gave up their 'old countries'. So much of our ancestors' ways of life are gone from our families...even the countries' names sometimes because they wanted desperately to fit in, to become Americans, to be accepted.

It was hard, but it worked. The very first thing most people did was to learn American English...when in Rome... That is the only way people will fit in today. Our immigrant ancestors didn't demand others learn their language...they gave up their language in their families by not demanding their children and grandchildren learn it.

United States citizens are not going to learn immigrants' language so we can speak to them. They will learn the language of our country...American English...or they will not fit in, will not be accepted...that's how it works...it will not change with 're-education' of United States citizens.

good question. Multiculturalism is not the same thing as racial equality. So what do your like, your dream or the reality. Multiculturalism was not born in the woods, it was born in American reality.

You are a racist and too cowardly to admit it. I hate differences too. Especially having to speak a different language. I hate anyone that can't speak English that lives here in Amerika. I hate you too.
