For example, I have a phone line in my bedroom and one in the living room. I have a BT line and my broadband provider is Virgin. Can I connect both PC's to this same connection using a separate modem in each room, or once one is connected does this prevent the other from connecting on the same line, as the line is technically 'engaged'? (as it would on 56k dial up).

Only 1 at a time will connect. It's not engaged as such, but the effect is the same.

You want to connect 2 at once? My Virgin broadband router has 4 ethernet ports and wifi... so I can plug 4 computers in at once over ethernet (or use a hub and get many more attached) plus any wifi-enabled ones can connect as well.

No, I don't have that many PCs... just work laptop for 2 of us and home PC.

If you bought your own router rather than taking Virgin's thompson one you may not have 4 ethernet connections... you may have 1 USB (in which case, use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and connect the two computers together) or 1 ethernet (in which case go out and buy a small hub or switch and connect both computers to it and then the switch to the router.

router approx = modem for broadband.

well it would work bu because one of them isnt connected to the direct line then it would cause the net for one of the computers to turn off or stop responding seems the line is needed for the phone

not too sure on this as i may do the same with both computers

if you want to use 2 diff computers and the same net then i suggest getting a netwrking system (dont worry u can password it so your neighbours cant steal it) networks cost around the same amount as broadband and would work much better for you

All you need is a router/switch combination (one equipment only) connected to your modem. There are equipments that are router/switch/modem combo too. All PCs should be connected to the router/switch. The router should be connected to the modem.
