Possibly the walkman. It was a whole new step in the way we listen to music. Before that you could not jog or ride a bike take an airplane flight and have music. The iPod is a huge advance over having to carry bunches of tapes, but it is still just an advancment on the walkman.

The sony walkman was the most important. It paved the way for the likes of the i-pod. At the time when it came out, it was amazing. The original walkmans still look reasonably small nowadays, so 20 odd years ago, they were seen as a bit revolutionary.

The Walkman was a huge advance in technology, I can remember the huge gadgets we used to use to play tapes.
The Ipod is just a well marketed mp3 player, I don't really feel its represents an advance in technology, more in design.
