Someone else mentioned charcoal. I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a couple in your car and trunk. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

Leave the windows open as often as possible. Liberally sprinkle baking soda over the seats and carpets, leave overnight and vaccuum up. You will probably need to do this a few times. Spray the roof with febreeze or neutradol and give the dash, door and windows a really good clean. Leaving slices of lemon on the floors from time to time will help too. In time the smell should fade.

All great ideas, but very importantly, check to see if the car has a cabin air filter. If it does, have it replaced.
I would also put a bin or other open container on the front seat floor and the back seat with charcoal briquettes and leave it there as long as possible. be careful not to spill them though!! The charcoal works to soak up odors.
Also, I personally used some of the dry carpet deoderant all over the upolstry and carpets, let it sit overnight, then vacuum up in the morning.

Let it air out! Have it professionally steam cleaned. But still it will not take all that smell out. It will take a long tome and a lot of airing out. Air fresheners only mask the smell.

Clean the car by hot air blast by vacume cleaner which has the facility of air blasting also. Other wise open all the windows and drive the car fast letting the fresh air in and then keeping the car in bright sunlight for an hour or two, keeping windows open.

Yuck. Clean out all the ashtrays, maybe get a professional valet, I imagine they would have special de-odorisers. Someone was sick in my friend's car and they used something in it which took the smell away and I imagine that would have been worse than ciggie smells. Think she paid about £25 so well worth it.
