I have a header tank that feeds the cold water in the bathroom only, when the shower is on water is being pushed back into the tank and it over flows. When the shower is on the outlet pipe from the tank is warm (its a cold water tank) so it's the hot water that is being pushed back into the tank. The shower has a mixer tap that isn't thermostatic and feeds from a hose from the main bath taps. Any ideas?

The tank feeds the hot water cylinder and from there the hot water goes to the mixer.
the problem is that the cold water to the mixer comes from the cold water mains and it's pressure is enough to force the hot water back up the pipe into the cylinder and back up to the tank.

the best cure is to feed the hot water cylinder and the cold supply to the mixer both from the same tank (balanced feed)

But this involves new pipework. Alternatively you could put a pressure restrictor in the cold feed to the mixer or a non-return check valve in the hot feed to the mixer

On the header tank there is a shut off valve, much like the one in your toilet, chances are that this is getting stuck. It fills only when the water is running to replenish the water that has been used. You have said that the pipes feel warm, then this sounds like your mixer tap is causing water to back up to the tank because the pressure of the water coming out of the hot tap is probably slow thus causing it to back up into the tank. I would get your shut off valve checked though. Good luck
