Exactly or in general?

Exactly, the signal for *me* comes from the router I've got plugged into my phone line to give me DSL.

In general... wifi generally all works like that... you hook a wifi base station up to a network or to a 'phone line or a leased line and route the wifi traffic out to the internet. The aerial is about 3-4 inches long so it can be hidden pretty well anywhere (as long as it's not inside something metal ... see faraday cage).

Which kind? Cellphone's 'Net service or Wi-Fi?

Cell towers for cellphone, some box near you for Wi-Fi (short-ranged).
