When I use Wingdings I don't get any tick symbols so if you have the same problem try the font 'Marlett' and its character 'a' for a tick.

Go to 'Insert/Symbol' and then choose Wingdings or Wingdings2. Both have the tick symbol. Just select it and then click Insert. You can format the tick in the document any way you like after that.

Insert, symbol - then change the font to wingdings and there is a tick right at the bottom on the bottom row.

If you mean this symbol: √ do this: 1. Make sure your keyboard is in NumLock mode. 2. Hold down the ALT key and enter the number 251 on the numeric keypad. (Note that many laptops have a blue FN key that changes a set of keys, also with blue numbers on them, into a numeric keypad.) This should work in any Windows word processor, text editor, browser or email client. Hope that helps.

Find one that you like on say google images and save it to the desktop. You can then either drag it into the document or save it to word's clipboard and use it from there!
(Not sure if word has a tick graphic built in)
:o)
