Did you pass playschool or not ? 1+1 is 2 because 2 is bigger and the next number after one, isn't it ? :)

Because we are able to perceive separate and discrete parts of a whole - without being able to perceive the whole.

Further or in the alternative, because we do not consistently perceive unity where multiple parts are combined.

Being semantic there is an element of definition involved also. E.G. Is one plus one oranges two oranges or a larger group or collection of oranges?
