Read the Tales of the City series by Armistead Mauphin. I think there are about six books in the series. It was written in the 1970's as a serial in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. The writing is witty, sympathetic, and renders love convincingly. The books should be read in order as follows: Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, Further Tales of the City, Babycakes, Significant Others, and Sure of You. There are homosexual themes in these books, so you need to be comfortable with that. These books are wonderful.

Bridgit Jones' Diary made me laugh out loud, and I am not a big fan of chick lit.

Janet Evanovitch's Stephanie Plum books, they start with One for the Money, are hysterical. Well written and interesting, too. Read them in order.

Anything by Jennifer Crusie. She's really funny, and her characters are believable. I would recommend starting with either Fast Women or Crazy for You.
