Is it possible that George Orwell was not ahead of his time, that he saw the way things were going and added them up to a logical conclusion?

Is it possible that Western governments just stole his ideas? Is it possible that they are so clueless, they have turned to literature (mankind's second greatest achievement) to find inspiration for how to run their countries?

Following this, is it JUST possible that, once these governments have used all ideas from the MUCH easier to impliment distopian visions of the future, "1984", "Logan's Run", "The Children of Men", "V for Vendetta" etc, that they will have no choice but to turn to utopian works? Think "Logan's Run" without the 30-year deadline, any episode of "Star Trek TNG", "I, Robot" etc.

Is any of this possible?

No, it's not possible. George really was ahead of his time. Things will just get worse and worse until the end of time. Have a nice day.

Everything is possible - but i suggest that George Orwell, wrote about a future based on the era that he was living in. The possibilities and ideas that he had were based on the then current state of the world, communism was increasing, Nazi Germany had been defeated - but he could see where the 'world' was heading and the direction' governments' were going. In 1984, the date may be wrong, because in 2007 - we are all living in George Orwells world of 1984, CCTV, reality TV, media brainwashing . Fear of others, but is all GLOSSED up as a consumerism. Look at all the taxes we pay, look at how we as people are treated in the work place, in health care, etc etc! WE ARE NOT LIVING IN A TRUE FREE SOCIETY!!

In the book 1984, there should be a MAP- look at it closely. Is it not the world we are living in? I don't believe that Governments, corporations etc were influenced by George Orwell, because the plans were already in place after World War 2.
Research it more - google it - the truth is out there!

to answer the first part, i only really believe he was a man that used logical thought and all the info and experience he had to come up with a "logical conclusion" as many before him did. mainly by the fact that not everything he predicted came true, a sure sigh of his infallibility. anyhoo this is not ur q, so i'll shut up. the point bout gvn's taking it on board is definitely interesting. i don't know if i'd go so far to to say i believe it's their sole guidance, but it's an interesting point nonetheless. if however that happened to be possible (not agreeing but lets humour u) then yes, i would have to agree with the third part. the very notion of such being a heavy and strong guidance in today's politics is quite humourous and scary, but yes if it works one way, it can work the other.

Ummm...are you clockin' out on me?

Is it possible that 1984 was, in fact, written by Francis Bacon?
