I have a Sony Vaio W1 and was clearing up my system the other day and have somehow deleted my cd drive! agggh! Now when I enter a cd it is not recognised and the drive has disappeared completely!
Now, I study fashion so my PC knowledge is pretty basic(!) I was told to run [regedit] but lots of scary computer language came up and didn't want to further destroy my pc, so....

I was hoping that a kindly, computer genius could help guide me through the steps to recovering the drive (apparantly no that difficult so I have been told?). Remember to speak sloooowly!!

Thank you so much for any help you can send my way! x

Have you tried System Restore ? Maybe if you tried that to go back a few days to when you know your system was in perfect working order, it might also fully restore the stuff you cleaned up.

In Windows XP

start > accessories > system tools > system restore > restore my computer to an earlier time

and then select a restore point from the bold numbers on the calender to when you think your pc was last in perfect health. You can also go back to previous months if necessary.

Good luck with it.

Hello,

(ANS) YES! well I think I know what you've done, you managed to uninstall the device drivers for your sony via CD/DVD drive unit.

**NOTE: Please stay out of the windows registry!! it should be avoided at all cost unless your a computer expert with a detailled knowledge of the registry. **Otherwise you can damage your system very easily.

**OK!! To fix your problem I'm assuming your machine is running windows XP here?

Start your machine and login to windows as you would normally, until you have a normal desktop.

Next, start button > goto start menu> now goto "settings"> goto control panel. Now open contol panel.

Next inside the control panel>goto "hard/remove hardware" (NOT software), open add/remove hardware.

Next run the "add/remove hardware wizard" that appears, it will step you through the process of finding & adding your missing CD\DVD drive.

**NOTE: you may need the drivers for the CD\DVD drive these should be on a seperate disk that came with the machine. Like a recovery CD,etc or failing this windows might try searching your machine for them (but if you've deleted them this is why you need the disk, or a copy of the drivers).

**You may find that the drivers are available on the Sony Vaio website, & you might be able to download them and install them this way.

**After the hardware is detected & after the drivers are installed you will probably have to re-boot the machine for all the new settings to become active. (to work). You should be able to see your CD\DVD drive again in windows explorer again if youve done this proceedure correctly.

**Its a quick job really if you know how should only take about 10-15mins Maximum.

Hope that helps?

Best Regards IR

properly then merely factor it is trouble-free to do is to pass into your rfile and photos and in spite of much less and delete form there, that should delete lots of the stuff from you laptop as lots of the difficult tension stuff is on your area. The furtherest removed from delete with out hint is to pass on your recycle bin (when you delete from documents ) and empty the bin. in spite of if there'll nonetheless be strains on your difficult tension so as that in case you extremely need to locate what you deleted then you definately can (Police try this by professionals)

go to the sony website, search your model #, download the drivers for the cd\dvd drive, install them, may need to restart after, and there you go.
