I've been using pads for years, but it's getting to be a pain. But I'm bervous about using tampons. What are the pros and cons of switching? Any tips? And when you insert a tampon, do you break the hymen (or whatever it's called)?

My main worry is TSS (toxic shock syndrome). I am very active, ride my bike a lot, and play sports, so will I probably have already broken my hymen?

Yes, a tampon will break the hymen, but you may have already broken that while playing sports or riding a bike or something. If not, it will be a quick second of pain when it breaks, but that's it. The pros of tampons: cleaner, less smelly, easier, can be used while participating in sports and swimming etc. cons: can be difficult to put in at first and a little harder to tell when you need a new one, also the risk for TSS (toxic shock syndrome). But that risk will be really low if you follow the instructions (changing it often enough). If pads are getting to be a pain, I recommend trying tampons out. You can always switch back if you don't like them.

EDIT: If you're that active than I strongly recommend trying tampons. The risk for TSS is low if you use the tampons correctly and it also is easily treated if you know the symptoms and get treatment quickly. Talk with your doctor about TSS, then make sure not to wear the same one for more than 4 hours and wear the smallest one that will absorb your flow. There's cautions on every box of tampons and a description of symptoms of TSS.

I much prefer tampons. I used pads until I was in college, then switched to tampons. I think they're MUCH more comfortable. Also, with tampons, you don't get "runoff" like you do with pads. I hated accidentally getting blood on my undies. The risk of TSS is relatively low. Just make sure you change your tampon at least every 8 hours. Some girls do break their hymen the first time, but since you're active, yours may already be broken. Just remember to relax while inserting a tampon for the first time. Boxes of tampons come with a little booklet of instructions and frequently asked questions and more info about tampons. Hope this helped you out! Good luck!

Yes when you insert a tampon , it breaks your HYMEN...
Tampons can cause TSS (toxic shock syndrome)...that is cause d by infections and the symptoms are reddening of your toe and hands.....However if you change the tampons at least twice or once a day the risk of having TSS is very low ...There are billions of women that use Tampons without any problems...
I will advise you to try it if there is any problems just remove it and start using pads again

Tampons are alot better. They are safe if you change then as said.I dont think they break your hymen they do go that way in..If the did it not a big deal. You probably would bleed alittle when you 1st have sex.I did even though I used tampon.Once you use them you will wonder why you did not sooner

read the instructions in the box...take your time! relax! You don't lose your virginity from a tampon. I love them over pads. Change them frequently.
