You can't ever tell for absolute certain. You open yourself up to him or her as he or she opens him or herself up to you. You learn to trust each other when each opportunity to take advantage of each other is not taken.

In trusting someone you open yourself to being hurt. The more you trust the more hurt you can suffer.

"So why trust if it brings so much hurt?" you ask.

Excellent question, if I do say so myself!

Because what you gain in having that trust honoured is so incredibly worth it. All those things you hide and keep safe from others? They aren't a big deal. Sure, there may be some embarrassment should they come out but so what?

A 5th grader caught me peeing in a sink when I was in second grade. There were centipedes in the stalls. I was afraid of bugs. She followed me back to my class and told my teacher in front of all the other students. The next week I peed in my seat because I was afraid to use the bathroom (it's not like the centipedes were miraculously gone!).

THAT was humiliating at 3 different points, if not more! I survived that just fine and only suffered a few days of teasing. I didn't let it get to me (I was like 8 and there were bugs where I bared my nakedest self. I was so not going to let anyone say I was bad or icky for it. The darn bugs were icky!) and that's the only way things can hurt you: if you let them.

You can tell they are trustworthy when they keep your darkest secrets secret. You can tell they are trustworthy when they go to completely absurd lengths to keep hidden your secrets you don't even really care about because that's what they think you want.

You can tell they are trustworthy when they trust you with the same sorts of things.

Trust. You will get hurt but you will get over it. It's even best to go through that. You'll realize it isn't that big a deal. You'll realize how strong you are. But, even better, you will find that person who will honour your trust. Trust me, there is nothing better.

It sure beats people seeing you pee in places you're not supposed to ;-)

Trust is something earned, and never taken for granted.
"You can trust me.." I've heard it an abundant of times, as you may have too.

I don't totally Trust anyone aside from family and a hand-full of long time friends,

You can not tell. We all look alike. Some people are good at disguising their true self. In life no one could be wholly trusted.

if they don't look you in the eyes when they speak, it usually means they aren't telling the truth
