The basic principle involves getting your wheels spinning fast enough that they break loose from the road so your tires burn and smoke because of the friction instead of launching your car. Despite what 'The Fast and the Furious' tries to tell you, it's not actually the most efficient way to get speed off the line.

It's the easiest in a RWD front-heavy manual vehicle with good power and torque and less grippy tires. Go heavy on the gas [just under redline] and then pop the clutch out all at once so the power goes to your wheels as fast as possible [if it's gradually eased in the car is more likely to actually move, which isn't the point].

Make sure there aren't any cops around. Have your car pointed straight forward and only do it where the road also goes straight, because if one or both of these isn't the case and the car actually moves unexpectedly you can get yourself into a lot of trouble.

Also, keep in mind that though some people consider it a great, showy attention-getter this really isn't very good for ANY part of your car.
