If you have been issued with crutches then the physio should have given you instruction, and it depends on the problem. If both legs are affected then;
You should use the crutch opposite to the foot you are stepping through on to support you. (i.e. left crutch& right foot, right crutch& left foot.)
If one foot/leg is affected then you should;
stand upright. feet together. move both crutches and the affected leg, step through with the good leg.
To climb stairs remember the rule as told to me by the physio - - good 1st to go up, bad 1st to come down. ( I always found it easier to slide down the stairs on my behind!!)
To rise from a chair put the handles of the crutches together, and use as support to rise.

First off all why didnt the physios show you how to use crutches ? Or did you borrow them ? Well when using crutches you must use them correctly as you can end up injurying yourself even more.First off all make sure the height off the crutches are correct,lower or higher the crutches till the elbow is slightly bent not completly straight,if you cant get your elbows in a slightly bent position well there too small and you need to get another pr.When you walk make sure the crutches are right by the side off you and not way in front as you will fall straight on your face.You need to put the crutches forward and walking with your bad foot first then follow your body through the gap and so on,if you are not putting no weight at all on your leg is a simular way crutches in front a little then hop on your good leg throught the gap till you are in line with both crutches.Going up stairs can be very hard and can also be dangerous if you dont know how to use crutches the proper way,better to go up and down on your bottom.Good Luck

I think the second answer is good and detailed but I just want to add one thing. Make sure that when you walk you are not supporting yourself on the crutches using your underarms. Always use the muscles in the arms to hold yourself up, leaning on them and putting pressure under your arm could cause nerve damage.

You lead with your bad leg/foot and a crutch then follow with your good leg. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg then follow with you bad and when going down stairs you do the opposite bad leg then good leg :)
