You where flying alone, the radio doesn't work, your cell phone is dead. You have very little drinking water, and didn't put any food on the plane, except for two bars of chocolate.

A monkey ran off with the emergency food ration box
(I feel mean on wednesdays);-)

The flight shouldn't have taken long, so you were careless
The jungle is hot and humid. You know from plotting your course, you are miles from anywhere.

Do you stay put, knowing after a while a search begins?
(not much hope there)!

Or, do you think, ok, better to start walking, and if it comes to it die while rising to a challenge?

Good Luck, you will need it!

I was plotting my own course so I do have a map and compass (or possibly a GPS unit). That helps.

Unless I did a stunning job of surviving a crash that included taking out a good chunk of the jungle canopy; there is little chance searchers will spot the wreck.

First step, find as much bright colored cloth from the wreck as possible. Divide into two piles. The first batch I take with me as I climb up into the jungle canopy. This is secured as an "X" in the tree tops as close to the plane wreck as possible (using wires and seat belts from what's left of the plane). This should be visible to a rescue effort.

Sit tight for the next 24 hours. Hope for the best. Scavenge the wreck for anything of use and get a fire going -- make sure there is a lot of smoke, use oil from the engine if possible. Keep this going through the night; fire is stunningly visible in the dark in the jungle.

Pour over the map. Looking for the closest place that allows for good geographic passage down hill and towards my destination (if closer than where I departed from). The keys are: ease of passage, proximity, distance, and terrain.

Leave a note with the wreck detailing my plan and compass course at each step of the trip. Let them know that if I hear an aircraft I will climb into the canopy and make an "X" like the one at the wreck (same bright colored cloth -- thus the two piles I mentioned earlier).

Head out four hours before sunset from the wreck. At sunset build a fire again if possibly.

Two hours before sunrise start moving and keep going till just before high noon. Stop and wait out the noon day heat. Trek off again four hours before sunset.

Repeat as needed.

Of course there is the steady mantra of "Cassandra is helping... Cassandra is helping...." that will ultimately save me.

You do make it difficult; the last time that this happened I was not alone and it was simply wait by the wreckage, drink my urine and eat the other passengers.
So, set up containers (or make them out of leaves) to collect rainwater and dew (just in case my urine dries up). Make a recce of the immediate area in an effort to find natural resources. See if you can find any arrow poison frogs and if so, fashion darts and arrows and the appropriate projectile device, as best as you can. Experiment with extracting the poison from the frogs and practicing your hunting skills at the earliest opportunity (that thieving monkey should not have gotten away in the first place - I would be barbequing him). Be tentative with your food initially to find out if it is harmful to your system. Give it a week and then decide that you have to move - find a stream and follow it.
As I write, I'm not certain that I would want to be resued; if you were there, I'm sure that I could settle down with the "me Tarzan, you Jane" thing.
