Consider that the woman was grieving not only the loss of her daughter, the fact that they never got the chance to reconcile with each other, and add the pressures of the lawsuits, the press, and the questions concerning her granddaughter, and I think you can understand why she wasn't in the right frame of mind to know everything she was doing.
