He is parodying how the typical American family lives, of course he takes a lot of liberties, but it is a parody of middle class America.

Homer: middle classed, overworked dad, always whining about his job.
Marge: Stay at home "soccer" mom who is a bored housewife that longs for more out of her life.
Lisa: Overachiever that will never actually achieve anything because her parents cannot afford the education she needs.
Bart: Typical American kid, bratty, always in trouble and has parents that say "my kid would never do that" even though those are EXACTLY the kids who are doing it.
