Hardware computers are embedded in a device like the engine computer in your car or the CD decoder in a Walkman. If everything works as intended the user isn't supposed to know it is there. They may do just one job or several jobs, as the computer in a Xerox machine can copy, fold, address the envelope, stuff the envelope, and sort the envelopes by zip code. The targeting computer in a cannon is the example I have seen most often where I've seen this word defined.

Hardware is anything you can physically touch.
Software refers to programs and operating systems, things that your computer "thinks" with, that you can't physically touch.
