Why did people overreact with the song? Wasn't it for anti-racism reasons?

it was for racist reasons, mid 80s, the general public did not want to see there whitest trollop frollicking around with a black man.
Also, theres a heavy inferring in the video that Jesus is black, another obvious possibility that ignorant white people cannot get their mind's arouns.

then, there the blasphemy of a woman seducing a priest, and the suggestion that she finds grace by banging jesus.

I would even suspect, some of those religious zeolots would go as far as to suggest an insestious tone in that Ms. Ciccone goes by the name "Madonna" .

all in all though, best video she ever did, with "What it feels like for a girl" a close second.

It wasn't the song that caused an uproar,it was the video. It portrayed Madonna in a field with burning crosses, then it showed her being intimate with a man of the cloth.
