Well, it IS never too late to start, but it is harder to learn the older you are. Have you ever played any instrument before? This helps with learnign hwo to play any instrument. Also, being interested in music and listening often also helps, becuase you learn how to set a beat in your mind. Using a keyboard for your computer can make learning the piano or trumpet easier to pick up with.

Cheap lessons from a personnal teacher are what's best. I recommend buying a beginner's booklet at your local music shop and asking the store owner which guitar/ violin/ sax to start off with. Try to learn a few things on your own, then call a teacher that can come to your place and help you out once/ twice a week for either 30 min or an hour per week.

The common list for hardest to learn instruments are : Organ, Piano, Cello. The violin/ bass are also rather difficult. Piano is easy to adapt to, but advancing can take some time unless you are a natural. Guitar is especially fun if you want to sing a few words out. Drums are fun, but alone, they can get kind of boring. If you absolutely have to tap the drums, i recommend a bongo. Loads of endless fun and entertainment for listeners as well.
Sax is difficult as well, you must have a strong lung capacity. Stay away from the flute/ piccolo/ clarinet/ trumbone. These can make you bored a little too easily. Trumpet is fun as well, and pretty easy to catch on to.

Also- stay away from electronic equipment ESPECIALLY an electronic keyboard. These may not be as expensive as a regular piano, but that's because the sound quality is NOTHING compared to any piano. If you want to play piano, go for a standing type. they don't take as much space and are cheaper.

It is never too late to learn. Since you have interest in music, you can learn playing tabla or violin or any other instrument of interest to you. Even at 80 one can develop interest and start learning to play the instruments.
After learning the skill, you can play the instrument in get-together or birthday of your family member. This is just to satisfy your inner self rather than earning money.

It is always advisable to try to play an elecrtronic keyboard - Yamaha, for instance. I would not advise to try playing any string instruments - your fingerwork may not be up to your expectations. And you can always try drums, provided that your neighbors do not live too close.

My mum started learning Piano at the same time as me, and she learnt quicker, because she really wanted to do it. And she's stuck with it cos she has more will power to keep going
BTW my mum is even older than you

I'm in my 40's and my niece is teaching me how to play drums. If you've got the notion to try it, I say, go for it!! Also, my brother-in-law is in his 40's, also, and he is currently (as of last December) learning to play the violin.
