A simple question with a complex answer, you will need to get to a history book or look it up on the web, but esentially:

The Indian independence movement began almost as soon as Britain's presence on Indian soil made itself felt. There are many skirmishes, battles and conflicts that mark the desire for self detemination the Indian Mutany of 1857-58 was a series of uprisings against British rule across northern and central India. There were of course other conflicts too such as the one at Fort William in Calcutta that led to the incarceration of nearly 150 Brtions in the Black Hole of Calcutta.
But the true independence movement did not get off the ground untill Mahatma Ghandi entered the fray with the policy of civil disobedience and peaceful non-cooperation with the British and their government.

More than any one Ghandi was the founder and shaker of the mdoern Indian independence movement.

There were others of course including the notorious Subash
Bose.

The post-war Labour government finally gave way to reality and gave India its independence in 1948. The plan was marred by teh seperation of India into India and Pakistan (at the insistence of Jinna) and this led to many years of conflict between the two nations and indeed between East and West Pakistan.

But this is too big a subject to discuss fully here, there are many resources that are easy to access both in print and digital formats. The colonisation of India (not just by the British) and its struggle for seld-determination is a fascinating area of study and perhaps ranks among the most important events in British history.
