I have a cousin who just moved in the US 6 months ago after getting a green card and now she wants to gp to New York because of a job opportunity as a teacher for autistic children. She is 32 but inspite of her disability she had a wonderful career back in the Philippines and is always driven to be an independent person. And yet we are all afriad for her beacuse she is still new to this country and she cannot see very well because she is a low vision person. NY is a big city and report of this city as having a high crime rate adds to our fear for her. Should we let her go to NY? Do you think she can cope the fast phase life of NY and would it be hard for her to get around the city?

Let her go? What do you mean "let her go". She is 32 for Pete's sake. Does she speak English? Has she gotten along ok in the Philippines and now coming to the U.S.? If she does not know anyone in NY, contact the school and see if their is someone needing a roommate or if their is a place for her to live where she will not be alone. You can help her by investigating housing, transportation, maybe a group that helps newcomers (especially from another country and with a sight deficiency)for her but you can't live her life (especially if she has such a wonderful and needed profession). If she has always driven to be an independent person, you must help her accomplish her goal or she will resent you and probably go anyway.

i think you should let her go to NY as NY is a place where there are job opportunities there waiting for you. I know sometimes NY can be a very scary place but be optimistic, your cousin will enjoy working there

She's an adult, you shouldn't treat her like a child. Yes, New York can be scary, but it can also be exciting and filled with opportunity. Let her go, but try to write and visit and call often.
