1. Keep the house clean all the time. Take out the trash daily.
2. Make sure all the doors and windows are weather sealed and close tightly.
3. Repair any bent or broken window screens.
4. Store dry foods in air tight containers.
5. Keep the lawn mowed and free of clutter.
6. Keep fire wood piles as far from the house as possible.
7. Use granular insecticides on the lawn around the house.
8. If you have pets, feed them on a regular schedule, and take away the food after 30 minutes. Bugs like pet food.
9. If the house doesn't have vinyl or aluminum siding, put on a fresh coat of paint or stain. It will repel a lot of bugs for a year or so.
10. Don't use aerosol pesticides. You've already discovered they don't work very good and stink. They are also dangerous. The only ones that are any good are the Wasp killers. And those only outside.
11. As a last resort, get on a regular service contract with a reputable pest control company.

You should treat the outside of the house too. There are repellants you can put on the ground that help keep bugs from nesting/laying eggs/etc in and around your homes foundation. The stuff is granual, kinda like big grains of sand.

It usually needs to be applied about 2-3 times a year to really work. Early Spring, mid Summer and then in the Fall.

Then there is always those "ultrasonic" things for inside. I don't know if they really work or not or if the claim about them being "pet safe" is true either but it might be worth looking into.

Bug spray is really toxic so stop spraying it around. It depends onthe bugs. Spiders are hard to get rid of but if it's ant or roaches or something get traps. A good bug killer is I think called Repel. You just put a couple of drops on a little card and put it on the floor. The bugs are completely gone in about 2 days.

You need to try and deal with your feelings about bugs since they everywhere and they always will be.

I like the devices that you plug in and it sends off a noise humans don't hear but bugs do and it drive them crazy and leave your space. But it seem that the bugs back on the Eastern coast have developed a resistance. Boric Acid is pretty good. They make shelf linning paper that has a bug repellent in it. But I wonder how safe it is for humans. They have gas bombs that you put in a room to gas them. But then again I wonder how safe it is for humans. I hear of one woman who was sick to death of the problem so she used so many gas bombs, it blew up the house. You can always call an exterminator. I guess the best way is to tent the house and use some kind of chemicals but don't do it yourself or you might exterminate things you really didn't want to--like you, or pets.
