When a mail is send to many mail IDs simultaneously, it's called bulk mail. It's used often for advertisments. Junk/Spams are mostly found in the Bulk Mail.

It's like junk mail you get in your regular mail except it comes to your e-mail and it just random people trying to get your attention. It's called bulk e-mail since it comes a lot at one time as you will recieve a lot of this e-mail in your e-mail.

Mails that has been sent to hundreds of recipients by the sender thus considered by your server as Spam - it will be received in the Bulk folders of your mailbox.

Bulk means alot. So bulk email would be email in great quantities.
