From someone who had the option to go to a lot of 4 year universities, but opted for community college I would say that a lot of people look down on community colleges. They want the prestige of going to a nice school, or some just want to get out the house and get the "real" college experience. I think if more people knew about the benefits of community college then it could become common place. And community college offers a lot more than lower debt; most have articulation agreements with other in-state colleges (including some really great ones), more attention, faculty that cares more about teaching than doing research or getting published, no teacher assistants, smaller class sizes, the ability to commute and work while going to school, and plenty of other things.

What some people fail to realize is think that it is the college that defines someones intelligence, but you are still going to be weather you go to Princeton or the local community college.

It's often an issue of finances, as in, how much will Mommy and Daddy fork over. I agree with you: it doesn't make much sense.
