I am 8 1/2 months pregnant with twins. I love shellfish and asked my doctor right away about the dangers. He said that it would not be harmful to have COOKED shellfish (like crab/lobster) in moderation....about once a week. You just want to make sure that it is absolutely cooked.

This is a very good question. Shell fish was designed by God to clean up the sea.
Shellfish can be placed in a body of water that is contaminated with cholera bacteria, and they will purify the water. Shrimp, oysters, crab, scallops and mussels are particularly efficient at this. They filter large volumes of water every day. Sewage laden with chemicals, toxins and harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses become concentrated in those shellfish. The cause of cholera outbreaks in several areas has been traced to contaminated shrimp, crab, oysters and clams.
". . . Reading all this, you might not be surprised to learn that the state Legislature of California proposed a law requiring the food industry to label shellfish with a message warning: 'This food may be dangerous to your health.' Why? In a single year, 50 deaths and many hospitalizations were found to have been caused by eating shellfish"

The link I have for you is really worth reading.

Hope this helps. You are blessed!

they are a reward from him.

As long as the crab is thoroughly cooked, it will not be a problem for you.

The only danger with shellfish in pregnancy is when it's raw or undercooked (sushi, raw oysters, etc.).

When you are pregnant, your immune system will be weaker than usual. So you have to avoid food that could be contaminated with germs (like soft cheese, raw seafood, etc.)

A common germ that can cause miscarriage is called Listeria. It is often found in soft cheese, unpasteurized milk, and cold cuts. But thorough cooking of your food, and milk pasteurization will kill Listeria.

i love shell food but i kept away from it during my pregnancy. it can give you food poisoning if not cooked properly and it is dangerous for your baby if that happens.

just don't have too much, no more than twice a week, and of course, like every one else said, totally cooked.

not by itself....if it's poorly prepared and causes food-poisoning, or you have an allergic reaction to it, the yes, it's possible.
