I really don't think it's anyone's business what the orientation of any public figure (with the exception of religious figures--that's a different thing all together) is. It doesn't effect what people do or the decisions they make, so what's the big deal? Most of hockey's fanbase, unfortunately, is a bunch of half-drunk mullet-sporting Canadian rednecks (yes, I said Canadian and redneck in the same sentence; deal with it) who would probably make a big deal out of it for a while, but things generally die down after a while no matter what happens. It's not like your friend (or you or the hypothetical guy you made up to see what people would say or whoever) is going on TV to tell everyone that he's spent the season slashing people to death with his hockey skates in every city the team traveled to or something! I think it would take an extremely uninformed and unthinking population to not realize that there have to be some gay guys playing in every sport, especially hockey. The backgrounds the player come from and the places they call home are about as varied as they can be, so of course there are going to be people who live different lifestyles in the league. If your friend (or etc, see above) doesn't want to hide his orientation from the fans, then he shouldn't. That doesn't mean he has to make a huge issue of it, either. If it comes up (reporter asks about a girlfriend, something like that) then your friend could simply take that as an opportunity to tell the reporter he's gay, but it shouldn't be something that's eating the poor guy alive because at the end of the day, it's no big deal in today's society. If this is a real and legitimate question, then I hope I've helped some and I hope your friend comes up with the best resolution about it that he can for his particular situation.

How about just not coming out. What you do behind closed doors is your own business. Does your "friend" think that other NHL players should come out as Hetrosexual? Yeah I know people just naturally assume everyone is straight but that doesn't mean the person has to be. I think we mostly assume people are straight because we are. We don't care about other people's sexual orientation so we just figure everyone else is like us in that sense.
Oh and the comment about it's who you are isn't it? NO it isn't. You are a HUMAN first. Sexual Orientation is AFTER Species, Race, Gender. You are a human, could you be homosexual if you were other creatures? Yes, so that doesn't define being a human. You are white/black or whatever other race, could you be homosexual if you were another race? Yes, so still not defining who you are on outward appearence. Well then you are a Guy and girls can't be homosexuals right? Oh wait yes they can. So still nothing that is being defined by OUTWARD APPEARENCE. So it isn't WHO you are. It is WHAT you are. They are VERY DIFFERENT things. Just like being a hockey player would be WHAT you are, not WHO you are. I'm sure most won't get the difference though.

Coming OUT is up to you> Just remember that Hockey is a bloody sport and remember what happened in the NBA if blood is spilled.Do you want that to happen in Hockey,I mean how long would a game take if you have to stop every time blood is drawn. You must be in Colorado and have no chance at a Play Off run this year to be addressing this issue at this time of year.I've always suspected it in some players and don't think it should matter but I'M sorry IT DOES.in the respect I've addressed. GO WINGS!!!!!!

Want a serious answer? Who honestly cares whether you like it up the butt? The problem is: Why bring that attention on yourself? You'll never have any privacy ever again. I would think if you can deal with the media and fan attention, then go for it.
Frankly, as long as you can play great in the playoffs that's all any fan, coach or teammate cares about.

i have answered a similar question before on here and my opinion is still the same.it really should not matter,it is a personal choice, any one who is comfortable with their man hood is not going to care one way or the other.what would make them think the gay person would be interested in them anyhow????same as straight people, just not attracted to everyone!!!!!!however there are narrow minded people in the world and you might want to weigh your facts first.i have noticed(i have worked with men most of my life)men will go along with what a crowd of men are saying to fit in,even if they have a different opinion(that is when talking about issues such as gays in sports).so like i said i would weigh the facts chances are his team mates already know and are more comfortable not talking about it!!!!!

I'm not one to judge, most likely your team won't either. I don't think that it matters if you are gay or straight as long as you are playing hard and living up to your full potential. I don't know if everybody would be as understanding as I would but thats just me. So, if your comfortable with it, then come out. If you think that it will effect your game and your relationships with people, then don't. But good luck.

Well ... I personally wouldn't care if someone was gay or straight as long as they do their job.It would be asinine to assume that their are NO GAY men in the NHL.If your comfortable with yourself ,don't be afraid to be yourself.Just the fact that you posted this question tells me that you'd be happier if you could be open with others SO DO IT !!! I'm behind ya !

NHL is one of the toughest games on Earth right ? Almost as hard as Rugby League we only ever had one Australian come out but he could back it up and hospitalised several opponents afterward ! But expect hell !! (not that its right or anything ).
