What causes the effect of the Aurora Borealis ?

It is caused by higly charged particles coming from the sun (on the Solar wind) and then getting trapped in the Earth's magnetic field - these particles react with the upper atmosphere and release photons (as Visible light energy.)

The two belts of particles are known as the Van Allen Belt (after he who discovered them.)

It's actually quite interesting......
