We aim above the mark to hit the mark

description in the form of real life example:
if u have planned to attain 3rd rank in your class you should work as hard as if you have to attain 1st rank

OK, I'll have to do an inversion for this example. Plus I don't even have the name of the game, so bear with me.

Most fairgrounds have a game involving a stand with a big button, connected to a vertical slide, and a slider, with a bell at the top. The point is to 'prove' your strength by hitting the button with a sledgehammer, and try to make the slider ring the bell at the top. With me so far ?

OK, the standard method to win every time is not to aim to hit the button, you have to aim about three feet ( 1 mtr ) below it. In other words to have to aim below the mark to hit the mark !
