my friends monitor keeps blacking out and won't turn on and it seems to shut down the computer. We've switched monitors and it is no help. There also seems to be a smell of burning and the tower is very warm after a short time (no more than five to ten minutes). We've put it into safe mode and run diagnostic on it and it didn't work. It is plugged into a surge protector so it shouldn't have been shorted. The computer tower is not even a year old and the monitor (lcd flatscreen KDSusa monitor) is not even 8 months. I've restarted it over and over and it keeps happening...

The monitor is unlikely to be the problem here. Check the graphics card and the power supply then check the ventilation.

It seems that the PC has shorted some where. For electronic equipments we can not depend on life. You can try to locate the problem your self bay taking guidance from http://www.computeraids.net/ or better to take the PC to a service shop.
