Wow, I haven't heard of that. Maybe with her being that big she could have mistaken it for gas or maybe not felt the kicks. It's hard for me to understand how a person couldn't know they were pregnant but some people never have symptoms so it may be possible. I wonder how difficult it would be for her to take care of a child. I was 275 when I was pregnant (due to a thyroid problem) and then went to 230 because of medication to regulate my metabolism. Though I didn't have mornings sickness or anything, I knew I was pregnant before the test came up positive. I feel the babies movement (though not kicking yet) and the only reason that I would think she couldn't feel it is because of her weight problem. I don't know though. The only thing I would think is she mistook kicking for hunger or gas. I guess we'll never know. Being at 275 I could barely breath. I always walked 2 miles a day, swam 30-60 minutes a day and ate about 700 calories a day until pregnancy (since about 13 years of age) trying to lose weight. . Of course being pregnant I had to up the calories to 500 more than an "average" calorie diet and couldn't keep my 700 calorie diet. I still walk 1-2 miles daily, and swim 30-60 minutes daily, but just as before, have to watch my signals carefully. Will need the same 500 more calories after due to breastfeeding. I noticed even at nearly 300 pounds I was pregnant. I knew even that big I was pregnant. I guess I just can't imagine a woman not knowing her body has a baby in there. I guess we will never know.

I live in California and no where on any of our news was there word of a 450 pound woman giving birth. But YES it is medically possible that someone would not know they are pregnant. Depending on her age she may have thought she was to "old" to be pregnant and passed the symptoms off as menopause (many menopausal symptoms present like pregnancy symptoms) Or she could have had irregular periods with her weight that wouldn't have been all that far fetched...and with irregular periods missing a few wouldn't have meant anything to her. Then again it is possible she had regular periods. Some women do. Just because you don't hear of it happening every day doesn't mean it is impossible. My cousin had regular periods through her 6th month had no idea she was pregnant, during her first trimester she felt a bit upset to her stomach but passed it off as a virus. She finally went to the doctor when she started feeling leghargic and seemed to have an upset stomach which was a bit more "crampy" Since her yearly pelvic exam was due anyway the doctor decided to give her one while she was in the office and that is how she found out she was pregnant. A week after she found out she had her last regular period but spotted through out the rest of the pregnancy. She gestated full term at 39 weeks and that pregnancy is now 35 years old...

I don't know about this story you mentioning but I did watch a true story medical show on TLC about a woman who came in with stomach pains. The doctors asked if she was in labour, she said no so they were scratching their heads on what was wrong until the water broke... She was a hefty woman
On a similar note, I was watching the news the other day and this 264 pound woman gave birth to a 13 and half pound baby in China My husband and I were shooked how chubby that kids cheeks were!

I haven't heard of this specific instance but it is very possible. Women who are very heavy have irregular periods or sometimes no period at all! This means that the usual way women learn they are pregnant (missed period) does not work. Also, someone who is 450 pounds obviously has a lot of extra tummy so the pregnancy won't be visible. Other symptoms of pregnancy can be mistaken for sour stomach, acid reflux, indigestion, and any other gastrointestinal ailments! Possible? Definitely!

Well, yeah it is medically possible that ANY woman of childbearing age can get pregnant regardless of size. But for this lady NOT to have known...well, she had sex at least ONCE in nine months. Sometimes obese women can have problems with not having regular periods, but, c'mon, this particular case DOES seem far fetched.

I find that more believable than the teenagers who give birth in public restrooms and claim that they had no idea they were pregnant....at least this woman had a plausible explanation why didn't know.

I was not able to find a local source, but if Scientific American says it's true, I guess it is.
